Chapter 22

Hanapepe

“What kind of tattoo are you getting, Amanda?” Tommy asked.

“I’ve been thinking about a specific design for a long time, and today is the day. I want a dragonfly with your names carefully drawn into the wings.”

Jen’s head whipped around in surprise. An insect?

“Like the lamps in your office?” Tommy asked.

“I’m impressed that you remember my Tiffany lamps. You should be a detective or something.”

“Or something,” he said sarcastically. “You could get the dragonfly in the style of stained glass.”

Amanda considered his suggestion for a second. “I think that would be trying to do too much. I want Ola to capture the intricacies of the dragonfly’s wings, including the iridescent and metallic shades, especially gold, so slicing the image into stained glass pieces might ruin the overall look.”

“I agree,” Jen said, surprised at how much thought Amanda had put into this, considering she had never mentioned it. “Where are you going to put it?”

“I haven’t decided. Where do you want to look at it on my body?” Amanda asked, running a lazy finger down Jen’s arm, a gesture that wasn’t lost on Tommy.

Out of the corner of her eye, Jen saw him watching. Regardless of sexual identity, having a former and current lover in the same room stirred the witch’s brew. She whispered her answer in Amanda’s ear.

Sleep-deprived and beyond tipsy, Amanda was incapable of whispering back. She said in a voice that everyone could hear, “But if it’s on my back, I won’t be able to see it. I was thinking on my derriere—here.” She slapped her left cheek—as if Jen needed the landmark.

Frustrated with her drunken lover, Jen whispered, “Can you please show some respect to Tommy by keeping your voice down? Above your cheek is just my preference, and I think it would provide balance to the one on the front of your body, next to your pelvic bone.”

“Oh, I hadn’t thought of that,” Amanda slurred. She smiled affectionately at Jen. “I just don’t think I can do a tramp stamp. I’m sort of committed to my cheek. It’s so pristine, and this would spice it up. Don’t you think?”

“I admit—you do have perfectly shaped, pristine cheeks. Adding a dragonfly would catch my attention, and possibly even a slap.” Jen kissed Amanda on her temple, excited at the thought. If they overheard, surely Cy and Tommy understood that she and Amanda kissed—and so much more.

Amanda was on her second wind, energized by the talk of her dragonfly tattoo. She cupped Jen’s face and kissed her ardently. Jen tried to resist, but when it came to Amanda, her resolve melted. Maybe just this one. God, her warm and talented tongue...

The full-on display caught Ola’s attention. He slipped with the tattoo gun just as he was completing the “y” in Cy’s name, resulting in an elongated stem. Keeping his mistake to himself, he quickly drew the stem into a line on the handgun. It wasn’t perfect, but it would blend.

When they broke apart, Amanda said, “I love you.”

Tommy looked up, surprised to hear that word—especially from Amanda.
